Air Conditioning and HVAC Terms Explained

Shopping for a new AC system or reading through a repair estimate can feel like learning a second language. This glossary breaks down the terms you’ll run into most often so you can feel confident making decisions about your home’s comfort. 

Cooling System Basics

Air Conditioner (AC Unit): A system that removes heat and humidity from indoor air and releases it outside. Most Central Florida homes use a split system, with an outdoor unit and an indoor unit working together.

Central Air: A cooling system that distributes conditioned air throughout the whole home using a network of ducts and vents, controlled by one or more thermostats.

Heat Pump: A system that both cools and heats your home by moving heat rather than generating it. Heat pumps are a popular choice in Florida because our mild winters let them heat efficiently without a furnace.

Ductless Mini-Split: A compact system with an outdoor unit and one or more wall-mounted indoor units, no ductwork required. A great fit for additions, garages, and older homes that were built without ducts.

HVAC: Short for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. When we say we’re a full-service HVAC company, it means we handle all three.

Packaged Unit: A system with all components housed in a single outdoor cabinet, often used for homes without indoor space for an air handler or for light commercial buildings.

Split System: The most common residential setup, with the condenser outside and the air handler or evaporator coil inside. The two halves work as one cooling system.

Efficiency and Ratings

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio): A measure of how efficiently an air conditioner cools over a typical season. The higher the number, the less electricity the system uses to do the same job.

SEER2: The updated version of SEER, introduced in 2023 with tougher testing conditions that better reflect real-world performance. New systems sold today carry SEER2 ratings.

BTU (British Thermal Unit): A unit of heat energy. In cooling, BTUs describe how much heat a system can remove per hour. More BTUs means more cooling capacity.

Tonnage: A measure of cooling capacity. One ton equals 12,000 BTUs per hour. Most homes need between 1.5 and 5 tons, and the right size depends on your square footage, insulation, windows, and more.

Load Calculation (Manual J): The heat gain and loss evaluation a technician performs to determine the correctly sized system for your home. We complete one before every new installation, because an oversized or undersized system costs you money either way.

ENERGY STAR: The government-backed label for energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR-rated equipment lowers energy bills and shrinks your home’s carbon footprint without giving up performance.

Variable-Speed (Inverter) Technology: Technology that lets a system adjust its output up and down instead of only switching fully on or off. The result is steadier temperatures, quieter operation, and lower energy consumption.

MERV Rating: A scale that measures how effectively an air filter captures particles. Higher MERV ratings catch smaller particles, though very high ratings can restrict airflow in systems not designed for them.

Parts and Components

Air Handler: The indoor unit that moves air through your home. It contains the blower fan and evaporator coil and connects to your ductwork.

Compressor: The heart of your AC unit. It pressurizes refrigerant and pumps it through the system so heat can be absorbed indoors and released outdoors. Compressor failure is one of the most common reasons an older system gets replaced.

Condenser Coil: The coil in your outdoor unit that releases the heat your system pulled out of your home. Keeping it clean is a standard part of routine maintenance.

Evaporator Coil: The indoor coil that absorbs heat and humidity as air passes over it. A dirty or frozen evaporator coil is a frequent cause of weak cooling.

Condensate Drain: The line that carries away the moisture your system removes from the air. In our humid climate, a clogged condensate drain is one of the most common service calls we run, and it can cause water damage if ignored.

Ductwork: The network of fiberglass or metal channels that carries conditioned air through your home. Leaky or poorly sealed ducts waste energy and make rooms feel uneven.

Refrigerant: The chemical that absorbs and releases heat as it cycles through your system. Low refrigerant almost always means a leak, not normal wear, and it’s a job for a licensed technician.

Thermostat: The control center for your HVAC system. Programmable and smart thermostats let you set schedules that trim energy costs without sacrificing comfort.

Air Filter: The filter that catches dust, pollen, and debris before air moves through your system. During heavy-use months in Florida, check it monthly. It’s the single easiest maintenance task a homeowner can do.

Service and Installation Terms

AC Tune-Up: A seasonal maintenance visit where a technician inspects, tests, and cleans your system. Regular tune-ups catch small problems before they turn into costly repairs.

Preventative Maintenance: The ongoing care that keeps your system running at peak performance, including coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, electrical connection inspections, and filter guidance. A service agreement puts it all on a schedule for you.

AC Replacement: Swapping an aging or failed system for a new one. Generally worth considering when your unit is 10-12 years old, repairs keep stacking up, or energy bills keep climbing.

Emergency Repair: Service for a system that fails outside normal hours. Apple AC answers repair calls 24/7, because Florida heat doesn’t keep business hours.

NATE Certification: Certification through North American Technician Excellence, the highest standard in the HVAC industry. Every Apple AC technician earns it, which means the person at your door has passed rigorous testing on the systems they service.

Refrigerant Recharge: Restoring refrigerant to the correct level after a leak is found and repaired. A recharge without a leak repair is a temporary patch, not a fix.

Zoning: Dividing a home into separately controlled comfort areas, each with its own thermostat. Helpful for two-story homes where upstairs and downstairs never seem to agree.

Indoor Air Quality Terms

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): The overall cleanliness and healthfulness of the air inside your home, affected by dust, pollen, humidity, pet dander, and airborne germs. Learn more on our air quality page.

Whole-Home Air Purifier: A purification system installed inside your HVAC equipment that treats all the air circulating through your home, like the REME HALO systems we install.

UV Light System: An ultraviolet light installed in your system, such as a Blue-Tube UV, that helps neutralize mold, bacteria, and other growth on the coil and in the airstream.

Duct Cleaning: Professional removal of dust and debris buildup inside your ductwork, which supports better airflow and cleaner air.

Humidity Control: Managing indoor moisture levels. In Central Florida, your AC does much of this work by removing humidity as it cools, which is why proper sizing matters so much here.
