What size AC do I need for my home?

 

  • In hot-humid Central Florida, an oversized unit is a common problem, because it cools the air quickly and shuts off before it removes enough humidity, which leaves the home cool but clammy. What efficiency does a new AC in Florida have to meet?

 

  • Since January 1, 2023, a new residential split-system AC under 45,000 BTU installed in the Southeast must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 (about 15 SEER). Systems 45,000 BTU and above must meet 13.8 SEER2 (about 14.5 SEER). (Source: DOE; AHRI)

 

  • In the Southeast region these standards are enforced by installation date rather than manufacture date, so a non-compliant unit cannot legally be installed after the cutoff. (Source: AHRI)

What's changing with refrigerant (R-410A phase-out)?

  • Manufacturing of new R-410A residential AC equipment stopped on January 1, 2025 under the EPA’s AIM Act, which phases down high-GWP refrigerants. (Source: EPA AIM Act, via Johnson Controls)

 

  • New systems now use low-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. R-454B has a global warming potential of about 466, roughly 78% lower than R-410A’s GWP of 2,088. (Source: EPA and Johnson Controls)
